This resulted in a huge amount of videoand audio data for almost every session. One observation session normally took about twoto three hours, followed by a 30-60 minutes interview session. We met participants twice a week torecord the process during their Design Project classes. In this paper, the authors emphasize the importance of the transcription process in qualitative studies, and share theirexperiences in using ATLAS.ti for transcribing audio and video data for a design study, CAQDAS, transcription, qualitative data analysis, design studies, interview, observation, audio data, video dataIntroductionOur engagement with the issue of transcription was initiated by our own research project, in which wewere identifying sketching behaviors among student-designers. ATLAS.ti, inaddition to its superior tool set for the analysis of qualitative data, also can be used for transcription. These transcription programs, however, were developed solely for transcribing purpose. In fact, thereare many software available in the market to facilitate transcription including Inqscribe, Express Scribe and F4Transkript. Since transcrib ing takes considerable amount of time, an efficient tool is required to prepare for the transcription. These data are usually transcribed into a written form for further analysis.
